The word Cancer is a word which can make someone’s life fall apart as soon as they hear it. It is a frightening word yet one that affects so many different peoples lifes. More than one in three of us will develop cancer at some point in our lives, and many of us have lost someone to the disease. Mum, wife, grandad, sister, best friend, auntie, neighbour, cousin, niece, brother – we are all potentially vulnerable, and this is why Cancer Research UK’s work is so important. As you may remember Ceri, Clare, Amanda, Donna and I completed the Race for Life last year, we all managed to raise a total of £500.00. We all ran/walked last year for our own different reasons. This year Ceri Rogers, Diane Marchant and myself are planning to do it again. Some of you may have already filled in a sponsorship for us all. If not you may shortly be asked to do so. We are hoping to beat the amount we raised last year which was a total of £500.00. To do this we really need your help and support!!! Anyone who has not managed to fill in a form yet but wishes to do so, can by seeing either Ceri or myself. The race is at Rhyl events area at 11am on Sunday 20th May. We will keep you updated on the total amount we manage to raise and also how we get on at the race.

STRANGE AND UNUSUAL FACT!! Cut down on flying, sell the car and recycle your bottles. But if you really want to tackle global warming, you should stop your cow from burping. The fist-sized plant-based pill, known as a bolus, combined with a special diet and strict feeding times, is meant to reduce the methane produced by cows. "Our aim is to increase the wellbeing of the cow, to reduce the greenhouse gases produced and to increase agricultural production all at once," said Winfried Drochner, professor of animal nutrition, who has led the ground-breaking project at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart. "It is an effective way of fighting global warming." Prof Drochner wants to use the pill to trap some of the energy from the methane, which is naturally produced in the fermentation process when a cow digests grass and is later mostly burped out through their mouths. Until now it has been wasted. "We could use the energy to boost the cow's metabolism," he said. The idea is that the cows would use the methane to produce glucose instead of passing it as wind. In turn this should help them to produce more milk. "The fist-sized tablets mean that microbiotic substances can slowly dissolve in the cow's stomach over several months," said Prof Drochner. Over the past 50 years the concentration of methane in the atmosphere has increased six-fold. With meat consumption growing, it is set to rise further. Submitted By Dave Whittall AKA Captain Planet

Awards Update
As was communicated to staff at the last All Hands Meeting, the company were awarded a Certificate of Recognition by Toyota for our performance in the field of Project Management throughout 2006.
The purpose of this article is to update staff on the progress of our application in a few awards we have entered.
Wales Business Awards – Welsh People Development Company of the Year.
We were actually invited to enter this award, as the organisers had heard about our success in the Daily Post Achievement Wales awards last December.
This award is given “to a company that is totally committed to developing company talent through career progression. The judges consider whether persistent promotion of training and development of staff has resulted in a positive change to individual and business performance. The winning company will also show their commitment to creating a greater understanding of business and performance”.
One main focus of our entry is the fact that we do develop Team Members and offer them the chance to advance their career.
For example, did you know that 26% of our Team Members have earned promotions either through internal applications, or by natural succession planning. 42% of these have enjoyed more than one career advancement.
Or that 67 of our Team Members were unemployed when they joined us and that 21 of these are amongst those who have been promoted.
Our entry outlines some of the training initiatives we have been involved in during the last couple of years, from the English language lessons we provided, through various vocational day release courses we support, onto the training opportunities in Japan.
We mention some of the Team Leader & Assistants training modules we have delivered, and provide details on the introduction of the Competence Boards.
We were notified a few weeks ago that we have been selected as one of three finalists. The letter stated “the quantity and quality of entries into this category have been unbelievably high this year and it is therefore a fantastic achievement to have come this far”.
Further to this I had to face a panel interview of 5 in Cardiff on 12th April where I was grilled about the content of the entry, the range of development which has taken place and the benefits both the individuals concerned and the Company as a whole have gained.
That was followed by having to pose, and I do mean pose for about 60 pictures, probably only one of which will be used, if indeed any come out at all! It sure was embarrassing though having to stand, lean and look, this way and that, in the middle of a busy street in Cardiff with everyone stopping to nose as they went passed, wondering who the hell I was!!!
The next stage is that a film crew visit TRB on Friday, 4th May when I’ll have to answer questions for the camera, and they’ll no doubt want some footage from around the factory.
Then the final stage is that we’ll find out whether or not we have won on Friday, 18th May . . . . . . . . . . . . fingers crossed.
National Business Awards – City & Guilds Employer of the Year
Another award we were practically begged to enter! The rep kept phoning and promising to email details, which never arrived.
This happened so often that we thought it was a wind up!
Then, about a day before entries were due in, the paperwork arrived by post.
This award “will go to the organisation that can best demonstrate well adopted company values, the provision of stimulating and supportive workplaces, and the active development of all employees . . . . . . . . . . “
Since entering, we have been notified that although our entry has not been selected as one of the four finalists “the judges have singled out your entry for special praise and have awarded you a coveted Highly Commended status”
The official presentation of our Certificate is due to take place at the National Business Awards Gala Dinner on Thursday 12th July at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, London . . . . . which clashes with the European TPS Conference TRB are hosting.
There are another two awards we have entered recently but we are not due to hear of our progress in time to be included here. Therefore, details of these will be provided in the next Newsletter.
